PVT Joseph Sandoval, a son of Mexican-American immigrants, deployed to Britain in 1944 with the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment to fight the second stage of the Normandy invasion. With the war all but over, he met his fate in Germany when his unit was ordered to cross the Elbe River.
